At Agoura Family Optometry we pride ourselves in providing you with an accurate and professionally made pair of glasses. Over the years, our doctors have earned the trust of their patients by prescribing honestly. We take care to inform you if you do not need a change in your current glasses prescription. We are often able to show you the change in your prescription right over your current glasses so that you may see the increase in clarity you should be expecting with your new glasses.
Contact Lenses
Contact lenses provide a versatile alternative to glasses in many situations. The latest contact lens technology allows us to effectively treat nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and presbyopia (bifocals). Many of our patients prefer to wear contacts on a part time basis for sports, travel, and special occasions. Contact lenses are considered a medical device because of the direct contact made with the cornea. This requires yearly health checks and prescription renewals. The key to being successful in contact lenses begins with proper care and hygiene regiments. This includes disposing of used contact lenses on time and not over wearing them.

Medical Eye Services
Our doctors are trained and experienced in the treatment and management of a multitude of eye conditions. We regularly treat bacterial and viral eye infections as well as eye injuries and foreign bodies. We are able to diagnose the source of flashing lights, floaters, and spots in the visual field. Some of the most common problems we treat include cataracts and dry eye. We are able to help develop a custom treatment plan for each of these conditions in order to achieve quick and efficient relief.
Common chronic conditions we manage include diabetic eye disease, glaucoma, and macular degeneration. Each one of these conditions requires careful monitoring and may lead to a need for surgical intervention. It is our job to help preserve your vision as primary eye care doctors and assess the need for surgery on an as needed basis.
Comprehensive Eye Exam
A comprehensive eye exam is like an annual physical for your eye. These exams are based on preventive care and early detection of eye diseases. Many eye conditions are asymptomatic or mildly noticeable until they reach an advanced stage where they are much more difficult to treat. The comprehensive eye exam is designed to assess the health of your eyes and treat any diseases before they lead to serious vision loss.
Comprehensive eye tests will include visual acuity testing, a glasses prescription, eye muscle testing, eye health exam, and a retinal exam. In many cases we utilize the Optos retinal camera to take an undilated photo of the back of the eye. This is an added convenience for our patients as your vision is not blurred and only takes a couple of minutes to complete. There are cases where we will need to instill drops to confirm the health of the retina including but not limited to flashes, floaters, and trauma. Drops may also be required depending on the size of the patient’s pupil at the time of the exam.

Myopia Control
Myopia is the medical term used to describe nearsightedness. These patients have difficulty seeing far away or experience blur in the distance. This common refractive state is present in about 30% of children in the United States. The scientific community believes the increase in myopia is related to the many near activities performed by children including use of devices and lack of outdoor play time. Standard glasses and contact lenses treat the blurred vision a patient experiences but they do not prevent the progression of myopia.
Myopia can lead to the need for thick and heavy glasses which is mostly a cosmetic concern. Health related issues are also connected to myopia which include an increased risk for retinal detachment, glaucoma, early cataracts, and macular degeneration. The younger the intervention or treatment is initiated the greater the effects.
Myopia control may come in the form of Atropine eye drops, ortho-k contact lenses, or multifocal contact lenses. A customized treatment plan will be discussed with each family in order to decide the best course of action. Each patient has individual needs and sometimes one or more therapies may be combined in order to maximize effectiveness.
Orthokeratology
Ortho-k is a nonsurgical treatment, through use of a hard contact lens, which changes the shape of the cornea, or front surface of the eye. The special contact lens is worn overnight and the reshaping of the eye happens while the patient is sleeping. After two continuous weeks of overnight wear the patient is able to see without correction during the day. The contact lenses are not a cure for myopia, only a treatment. The contacts must continue to be worn every night in order to obtain the desired myopia control and improvement in the uncorrected vision. These lenses require a very specific fitting process and a couple of extra visits to the clinic during the initial stages. Our doctors may discuss ortho-k with you or your child as an alternative to drops or daily wear contact lenses.

Scleral Lenses
Sclerals are a specialty type of rigid gas permeable contact lens which are used in the treatment of corneal disease, high prescriptions, and post surgical complications. The main corneal diseases which can be treated with sclerals include but are not limited to keratoconus, pellucid marginal degeneration, and corneal transplants. These lenses cover most of the front surface of the eye and are inserted with a saline solution which helps the contact lens rest comfortably on the sclera or white part of the eye. Scleral lenses can provide an increase in the sharpness of a patient’s vision in many cases. These lenses are known for providing clear and consistent vision in the presence of eye diseases that may complicate the use of standard contact lenses.
Surgical co-management
There are a variety of eye surgeries available when it comes to correcting your vision. Most people have heard of LASIK and think all prescriptions are fixed using this technology. LASIK is only one of several different types of refractive procedures which can assist in fixing your uncorrected vision. There are many factors to consider when choosing the proper surgical techniques to employ including age, visual outcome desired, need for glasses after surgery, occupation, hobbies, and overall lifestyle. Let our experienced doctors help you choose the right surgical procedure for your eyes whether it be LASIK, PRK, implantable contact lenses, or cataract surgery.
A cataract is a cloud which forms in the lens inside the eye. Cataracts can be debilitating due to blurred vision even with your best glasses prescription. Many patients look forward to cataract surgery because it gives us an opportunity to replace the lens inside the eye with any prescription we want. Many choices exist when deciding on what type of lens to implant and what type of vision to aim for after surgery. Another option to consider includes laser assisted cataract surgery which helps to precut the cataract before taking it out of the eye. Our surgeons have performed several thousand cataract surgeries and are very skilled at this minimally invasive procedure. To discuss all of your options please call us for an examination so we may determine the best course of action for your specific needs.
